Most men may not think about adding hair products into their daily routine, but the truth is, adding the right products can be an absolute game-changer for your hair’s health and overall look! With so many products available on the market, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options. Fortunately, most people only need to find a few simple products to transform their hair, and they’re all generally easy to use.
Before you pick a hair product, consider what your hair needs and what you want it to do. For example, if your hair is on the oily side, you won’t want to pick an oil-based product. Once you’ve considered that, you’ll be able to narrow down your options. Here are some of our favorite simple hair and facial products for men:
- Shampoo and Conditioner. Starting with the basics, review the kind of shampoo and conditioner you use and ensure it’s good for your hair. If your hair is dry, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and if your hair is oily, use products specifically targeting those issues. It will make your hair much easier to manage. Additionally, you may want to look at the ingredients in your shampoo: sulfates, parabens, and salt are commonly found in cheap shampoos, and you’ll want to do your best to avoid them. Look for natural ingredients when you can. And if you’re not using conditioner, start. It will moisturize your hair and protect it from attracting dirt and oil.
- Wax. Wax is a great product that gives you added shine and a low-medium hold hairstyle. It’s especially great for those with thicker hair looking to achieve a messy bedhead look. Wax is also made from natural ingredients, so you won’t have to worry about it doing too much damage. If you’re looking for something to hold your hair in place throughout the day, wax isn’t the right product for you.
- Pomade. Pomade will give you more hold and more control than wax. It’s perfect for a wet, slick-backed look with high shine and can come in water- or oil-based formulas. Either formula is good for those looking for a medium-high hold product. Oil-based pomades can be harder to wash out of your hair, and water-based pomades may leave your hair stiff/crunchy, depending on what is easiest for you to deal with.
- Gel. Gel is the highest hold product on this list, as it can hold even the thickest of hair in a rigid, stiff shape for several hours at a time. It is also ultra high shine, though you can now get matte gel options if you’re looking for one. We recommend gel for those with thicker hair as you’re likely going to get the most use out of it- those with thinner hair may find it too high strength.
- Serum/Oil. If you have drier, frizzier hair, seriously consider adding an oil or serum into your daily self-care routine. It will add moisture, softness, and shine to your hair and may even help it over a more extended period by preventing breakage. These products are not meant to hold your hair in place.
- Leave-In Conditioner. For those with dry, dehydrated hair, it’s time to use a leave-in conditioner. This will help moisturize your hair in between washes while making it smoother, shinier, and healthier. It will also help detangle your hair and protect it from heat damage and other environmental factors.
